200114- Gathering art materials at night

While our initial plan was to paint on the walls this week, the weather was disastrously cold. I thought it would be a much better idea to work on creating smaller artwork indoors, and we apparently all agreed.

In fact, he is also mentioned in one of my previous posts (Press photo to see post)

The first step was deciding what we should create. I had seen some very good works of junk art created by penguin Village Gwangju artists on Instagram. The artworks were pieces of scrap metal attached in the shape of fish onto wooden plates. I could also see the connection between Jeju Island and the marine animals--Jeju is often extolled for the remarkable quality

of its marine ecosystem. We were also planning to participate in the Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Contest, a prestigious competition on raising awareness in the environment through fine art; thus, we thought that we could use the artworks to participate in the competition as well. I asked my roommate (who is also our member and a very talented artist) if he liked it, and he replied that it would look great when finished. We then discussed where the artwork will be displayed. It also happened that the villagers decided to give us another building to work on, so we decided to display our artwork on the outer walls of the building.

Specifically, we thought of painting the walls as if it was inside the ocean, and attaching the fish artwork onto the walls irregularly, so that it would convey the movement of nature and also raise awareness on marine pollution.

We then had to gather materials for it. We had loads of aluminium cans and scrap metal, so the material used to make fish wasn't that much of a problem. However, we did not have the wooden plates, and thus we decided to look for those. We thought they would be relatively easy to find, since all we had to find was wooden plates or furniture that were thrown away. We also had a pile of wood in the backyard of the house that KIS Jeju is working on.

We instantly took action, and my friend and I left at night to gather the wooden plates. We hopped on our bikes and ransacked the city looking for illegally thrown away wooden plates. On the way, we also cleaned the dumpsters.

Finally, we ended up with three large wooden plates. They will be used for this week's artwork!
