190831- First Day of Penguin Village Weekend Session

최종 수정일: 2020년 1월 29일

As the first day of penguin village approached, my angst rapidly grew. But I soon discovered that my anxiety was unfounded, as everyone worked so well in nearly perfect coordination. Even under the scorching sun, everyone tried to paint the last drop of Jesso onto the building’s wall. I felt so thankful to all my team members that I bought drinks for them when the session ended.

Today was a valuable lesson for me, as I learned two important things: planning involves a LOT of preparation, and that preparation makes perfect.

Frankly, last year’s Penguin Village was not a huge success. I believe the primary reason was my lack of preparation. Due to the incessant barraging of standardized tests, I did not have enough time to devote to Penguin Village. In contrast, my SATs had just finished, and I grew more apt to handling my schedule, yielding more time for Penguin Village. As I put in more time, I can already feel the difference in people’s attitudes, our productivity, organisation, and so many other things that became much better compared to last year. Yes, there are changes (i.e.. Members, CCA to Bryant), but I definitely believe that what caused this huge change is my preparation.

Still, there is room for improvement. Jesso splatter wasn’t dealt well (there was even a girl whose hair was dipped in it), and we ran out of Jesso by the end of the session. I thought that I could have prevented such incidents if I had tried using Jesso or asked more people for precautions. I learned that for every preparation, a leader must inscrutably prepare for everything that might happen.

We have a long way to go, and the village will decide if we can work on more buildings depending on the quality of the first building. I really hope that this term goes well and yields a LOT of successful artworks and outcomes.

Other members also sent me their feelings/ concerns/ opinions on today’s activity.

Today we went to Bosung-RI and started to plan what to draw on the wall. On the first side of the wall, we decided to write basic information about Bosung-RI, draw a stone fence and two penguins. After planning, we started to paint gesso on the wall. Gesso is a white paint that is required before putting color paint, just like the function of primer in makeup. However, we ran out of gesso, so we went inside the building and planned the basic things to put on the other side of the wall. On the other side, we are going to draw the map of Bosung-RI and tractors that are used in farming since the storage we are painting is full of tools used in farming. Next time, we are going to complete painting gesso and start coloring.

Today was the first day of Penguin Village Bryant. We performed numerous tasks. First, we had time to plan and we decided to draw tractor, stone fence, and two penguins with a short introduction about Bosungri. Then, we went outside and started to paint gesso on the wall of the warehouse. Gesso prepares the surface for painting, making the surface slightly textured and ready to accept the colour paint. Since we are going to paint, we need gesso to prime the surface of the wall. After painting gesso for a while, we ran out of gesso so we went back inside the building. In next Bryant session, we will going to paint gesso on the parts that we didn’t get to paint and start painting colour paints.
