190820- Planning and starting “Bryant” sessions

As a new academic year has begun, we have launched new “Bryant” sessions! So what are Bryant sessions? They are Saturday morning to afternoon sessions that are mandatory to every student. One difference between a regular school day and a Bryant session would be that in a Bryant session, the use of time is more concerned with activities rather than learning new things.

However, these sessions are much longer than CCA sessions. There are several reasons why I decided to launch a Bryant session now; some of them being that (1) I wanted to see how well the project goes in a CCA session, (2) I then wanted longer sessions so that we could actually visit the village, and (3) I also wanted a much productive session to produce more artwork. But as the sessions are much longer, this also meant that I had to prepare much more.

I then looked for people that I could receive help from—and the first person to do so was my art teacher. Since he was knowledgeable about using various media, I asked him if there were anything that I should keep in mind when we are painting murals or doing junk art. He told me some procedures and tips when painting murals:

1. The material of the wall is important. Smooth walls are best.

2. First thing to do when painting an outdoor wall would be to wash it with water and tissue. This isn’t always necessary, but it is good to do so, in case the walls are dusty.

3. After doing so, apply jesso—a primer—to the walls. This will allow a more vibrant color when painting.

4. When painting, do not paint too quickly with a roller. It can splatter all over the place. Also, use newspapers to put them under the building.

5. After finishing the painting, cover it with finisher. This will prevent the painting from wearing off or becoming darker.

6. Finally, it is better to use lots of cheap brushes rather than a few expensive brushes, since the brushes will easily wear off.

7. Remember to buy the adequate paint. Acrylic is good enough, but it is expensive.

Keeping these in mind, I found some websites that sold materials for mural painting, and ordered them immediately. I also found outdoor paints from Pantone and ordered the three basic colors, and white and black.
